Bladder infections (cystitis) are considered to be a minor illness, a minor self-limiting condition that requires symptomatic treatment and simple advice.
Unlike hayfever, cold and tummy bugs which are allergic and viral, cystitis involves a bacterial infection with the potential risk of sepsis, tissue damage and death.
Bacterial infections are contained in the bladder by valves in the ureters and by a thick muscular wall and constant flow of urine clearing bacteria out of the bladder.
The urine dipstick (lab on a stick) is a valuable near patient test but cannot replace the need for bacterial confirmation of repeated or complicated Urinary tract infections...
